How long do batteries for electric cars usually last?

The nuclear option, which should only be used in cases of catastrophic damage or end-of-life situations, is a complete battery replacement. But most of the time, a competent technician can make the necessary repairs. In the vast majority of cases, however, a skilled technician can perform a repair. The crux of the issue is that distinction. Typically, this procedure entails opening the pack, determining which module or cell is performing poorly, and replacing just that one component.

This modular approach is revolutionary; it makes a potentially costly problem manageable. Even cars with more than 150,000 miles on them frequently retain at least 83% of their original range without requiring a battery change. Less than 9% of electric vehicles that are ten years or older have ever needed a battery replacement, meaning that more than 90% of them are still using their original packs. Federal regulations in the US mandate that all new electric car battery management system vehicles (EVs) have high-voltage battery coverage for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Many brands go above and beyond this minimum: Rivian and some Tesla models raise the mileage limit to 120,000 or even 150,000 miles, while Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz extend coverage to ten years. The batteries of high-mileage drivers who have driven more than 100,000 miles often retain between 88 and 95 percent of their capacity, demonstrating how reliable these systems have become. Modern lithium-ion packs are engineered to serve reliably for well over a decade, with real-world data showing that most retain the vast majority of their original range even after years of daily use.

Advances in chemistry, thermal management, and software continue to push performance higher with each new generation. Federal modeling indicates that most packs in moderate climates will serve for 12 to 15 years before they reach end-of-life thresholds.
